OCE's World Music Night with special guests TAM Edo Bayashi Ensemble

OCE's World Music Night with special guests TAM Edo Bayashi Ensemble

TaikoArts Midwest's (TAM) Edo Bayashi team presents traditional Japanese Edo festival music and stage dance performance. This music originates from festival street music, dating from 1603-1867 in Edo, Japan, and brought to the stage through the highly esteemed group, Wakayama Shachu, who continues to instruct this team. TAM's Edo Bayashi Team is one of few in North America, equipped with a complete set of officially recognized instruments for Edo Bayashi, and are one of even fewer studying the advanced versions. The Edo Bayashi team is dedicated to further study the music to deepen, share and contribute to expand the cultural diversity in MN arts.

Experience the Heartbeat of Traditional Japan!

The TaikoArts Midwest Edo Bayashi Ensemble brings the vibrant spirit of 17th century Japanese festival music right here to Minnesota. Dedicating themselves to preserving and sharing authentic traditional Japanese music (originated during the Edo period, 1603-1867), the ensemble offers a rare glimpse into a rich cultural heritage.

What to Expect:
- Rare Traditional Instruments: Hear the mesmerizing blend of festival drums (Taiko), crisp metal percussion (Kane), and melodic bamboo flutes (Shinobue).
- Enchanting Performances:Experience c classical Japanese dance (Mai) seamlessly woven with live, traditional music - a rare treat in North America!
- Dynamic Taiko Drumming: Feel the thunderous energy of powerful, full-ensemble Taiko drumming.

Step back in time, feel the celebratory rhythm of historic Tokyo, and immerse yourself in an unforgettable cultural experience!

Performers:

Jeff Ellsworth (Taiko) is excited to be performing Edo Bayashi at Bryant Lake Bowl and would like to thank the members of Other Country Ensemble for their support and attendance at TAM taiko events.

Susan Tanabe (Kane, Taiko) has played taiko since 2005 and is a member of the TAM Edo Bayashi Ensemble, Big Gravity, Ensō Daiko, Jodaiko, and the North American Kasuga Onigumi. She also freelances with other ensembles, orchestras, and artists.

Junko Kumamoto (Mai, Taiko) is dedicated to present and sharing Japanese traditional performing arts through performance and the essence of its culinary culture as a Japanese restaurant owner.

Chiaki O'Brien (Mai, Shinobue, Taiko) is a native Japanese, never played Taiko prior to moving to Minnesota in 2004. She started taking Taiko classes in 2008 and has been hooked since then. She joined the Edo Bayashi Ensemble later. She found out about the existence of Edo Bayashi because she does taiko, not because she was born and grew up in Japan.

Hiroshi Yoshino (Shinobue, Taiko) Though raised around festival drumming in Japan, Hiroshi Yoshino first picked up bachi (drumsticks) in 2016 after moving to Minnesota. He enjoys playing taiko and fue (bamboo flute) as well as composing original music.

Emily Harada (Kane, Taiko) started taiko as a child at the Midwest Buddhist Temple/ Ho Etsu Taiko in Chicago. She had the fortune to watch Edo Bayashi throughout Tokyo, and started practicing this music in Honolulu at the Taiko Center of the Pacific under Kenny Endo, and later with Ho Etsu. She is happy to play with TaikoArts Midwest's ensemble.

The Hosts

Other Country Ensemble (OCE) features veteran musicians from the Twin Cities, performing traditional music from the northern Mediterranean region ranging from Spanish Sephardic to Greek and Turkish music, and original compositions inspired by the regions. They weave tales of the history of the music from 711 A.D on and the fusion of sounds that spread through the Mediterranean, as well as the instruments they perform.

OCE is:
Steve Clarke - bass, alto and C flutes, and soprano sax
Laurie Knutson - bass and alto clarinet Scott Nieman - oud, bouzouki, mandocello
Michael Ziegahn - flamenco guitar, cajon, voice
Mark Black - frame drums, darbuka, and various percussion

Giggles & Schnitz' Contractually Obligated Comedy Cornucopia!

Gary Giggles and Lottie Schnitz were once America's favorite comedy couple. Then came the fights, the divorce, and decades spent happily avoiding each other. Unfortunately, they signed something.

Now Gary and Lottie are reuniting for one final live special, whether they like it or not. As classic sketches, songs, and showbiz shtick collide with backstage grudges, old secrets, and new generations of comedy, keeping the show on the rails may prove harder than putting it on.

Part sketch comedy, part backstage drama, and part love letter to the people who spend their lives chasing a laugh, Giggles & Schnitz' Contractually Obligated Comedy Cornucopia! asks what happens when the act is over, but the chemistry isn't.

Created by Casey Martin and Josh Carson.

Featuring:
Casey Martin, Josh Caron, Nels Lennes, Michelle Cassioppi Guertin, Aron Woldeslassie and Aisha Ragheb!

Tickets are $18 in Advance / $20 at the Door. Doors open at 6pm. Online ticket sales end at 5pm.

Giggles & Schnitz' Contractually Obligated Comedy Cornucopia!

Andy Ulseth - 40th B-Day & Career Retrospective

Andy Ulseth - 40th B-Day & Career Retrospective

Minnesota singer-songwriter Andy Ulseth celebrates his 40th birthday with a special retrospective concert featuring songs from across his catalog, along with the stories behind them.

The afternoon performance looks back on more than two decades of writing and recording while also offering a glimpse of what's ahead as Ulseth prepares for future releases.

"Ulseth emerges as one of the scene's most promising new indie-folk pickers since Jeremy Messersmith with his debut album, Broken Bones, whose all-acoustic and sometimes melodica- and omnichord-enhanced tunes alternately recall Fleet Foxes, Nick Drake and the Mountain Goats." - Star Tribune

"Maybe it's the Minnesota pedigree, but Andy Ulseth is able to build a campfire of a song with only the bare essentials." - Watch Me for the Changes (Washington, D.C.)

Presented as a one-time event, the show promises an afternoon of music, stories, and a few surprises.

Other Country Ensemble's World Music Night with special guests Makam Baklava Trio
Aug

Other Country Ensemble's World Music Night with special guests Makam Baklava Trio

Makam Baklava is a Minnesota-based Balkan band that performs 'sweet folk and art songs' from Azeri, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Turkiye. With a rotating cast of musicians (bass, cello, clarinet, guitar, oud, percussion, saz, violin, and vocals), Makam Baklava is on a mission to expose their fellow Minnesotans to the different instruments, rhythms, and songs of the region.

Tonight Makam Baklava is a trio consisting of:
Rada Kolarova (Vocals)
Lara Akal (Vocals)
Orhan Ucer (Turkish Saz, Guitar and vocals)

Rada Kolarova is a versatile vocalist who has trained in Bulgarian folk and classical music, most recently winning the Minneapolis songSlam this past January with a composition in Bulgarian. She started singing as soon as she could speak and hasn't stopped since. Originally from Sofia, Rada and her family moved to the Twin Cities, where she grew up surrounded by a diverse range of music. To this day, she enjoys exploring different vocal styles (as part of local folk ensembles) and processing her reality by writing songs, including for her band Rada K & The Cicadas.

Lara Akal is a soprano, musical theatre actress, pianist and character entertainer with a degree in Vocal Music from the University of Minnesota. As Publicity Chair of the Turkish American Association of Minnesota, she aims to engage both our local Turkish-American community and the wider Minnesotan community in outreach through the power of social media and cross-cultural connection, especially in an arts capacity. You can catch her as Ariel in Masquers Theatre’s production of The Little Mermaid this summer!

Orhan Ucer has been considered the Musical Ambassador of Turkiye in Minnesota and is the leader of Makam Baklava. He has been performing with the Turkish folk instrument called he saz (or baglama) and the guitar since he was a teenager. He has a deep passion for the music of the Turkish regions, sharing the music of his formative years with fellow Minnesotans.

Laurie Knutson - bass and alto clarinet
Scott Nieman - oud, bouzouki, mandocello
Michael Ziegahn - flamenco guitar, cajon, voice
Mark Black - frame drums, darbuka, and various percussion

Can We Close the Racial Wealth Gap?
Aug

Can We Close the Racial Wealth Gap?

Minnesota has one of the largest racial wealth gaps in the nation. The GroundBreak Coalition, led by Adair Mosley, has some ideas on how to close it — and they don’t involve a clamp.

Join us at the Bryant Lake Bowl, where Mosley and Tane Danger will talk about GroundBreak’s critical work funding first-time home buyers, entrepreneurs, and housing developers serving the Twin Cities metro. With that conversation as the foundation, the Danger Boat improv squad will construct one-of-a-kind comedy sketches that put the LOL in low-interest loans.

Will this be the night we get to see Tane Danger’s much-ballyhoo’d backhoe impression …? Brandon Boat’s first draft of “Mortgage: The Musical” …? There’s only one way to find out.

—-

"Imagine C-SPAN suddenly swarmed by the cast of SNL" —The Minnesota Star Tribune

A civic comedy institution is returning at a moment when people are overwhelmed by serious issues and exhausted by bad public conversation.

But what is The Theater of Public Policy (T2P2)?
- Shows open with a lively conversation with a newsmaker or policy wonk.
- That conversation inspires a team of Minnesota’s most talented improvisers, who create entirely spontaneous sketches based on the interview.
- The expert guest then answers questions from the audience.
- The show wraps with one last round of improv from the cast.

It’s a one-of-a-kind mix of learning and laughter — and each show only happens once. Join us for our 20th season full of thoughtful insights and dynamic performances!

Leftovers Night : a feast of alternative comedy

Leftovers Night : a feast of alternative comedy

A strange and delicious feast of alternative comedy acts that are in the making, need experimenting, or somehow didn’t quite make it to the main event just yet. Berlin based idiot duo Band Practice (Ash and Lisa) is has been hosting this show since 2021, originally inspired by the post-covid hunger for creative chaos. This is the duo's first time in the USA and we are delighted to visit a dear city of Ash's past, and Lisa's first time ever in the Twin Cities. We are teaming up with burlesque and theatre-maker Echidna for this one :)

Come for a loaded evening of delightful acts of all sorts inviting in the stupidity we each contain.

Want up to 5 minutes of stage time? We welcome acts of alternative comedy variety that means character, clowning, puppets, or any strange genre-less performance type that tickles you. Reach out to bandpracticeduo.com or on socials @bandpracticeduo to snag a slot.

Is Laughter Contagious? (And Other Public Health Ponderables)

How concerned should I be about Hantavirus and Ebola? Should we still be wearing masks? And will a doctor be available at the show to check out this rash?

In this live show, we’ll discuss the ins and outs of infectious disease with Dr. Michael Osterholm, a world-renowned epidemiologist and the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota. After an uplifting conversation about the many ways we can die, we’ll bring our cast of improvisers to the stage to perform live, unscripted comedy scenes about everything they’ve heard.

You’ll leave the show with new knowledge, new laugh lines, and a newfound fear of recycled air. You won’t want to miss it!

Improvisation #221

an empty room.

Sten Rudstrøm enters the stage.

he doesn't know what is going to happen.

there's no script, no preconceived thoughts or ideas.

from out of the emptiness he crafts a landscape of dance, speech and song.

at the intersection of the present, imagination and life experience he molds himself into the stories of strange characters, pictures, places and things.

a wild, unpredictable, unique journey through raw human nature.

The Tire Fires

The Tire Fires (Philip Simondet and Will Roberts) are a Folk Punk Rock band from Minneapolis.

Even their happiest songs are pretty fucking depressing, and even their saddest songs still have humor in them.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to die.

Corey Smith performs “Essay on Resonance” with special guest Lynn Corelle

Corey Smith performs “Essay on Resonance” with special guest Lynn Corelle

Essay on Resonance is a 60-minute solo performance by Corey Smith, a Chicago-based performance artist and composer. The work unfolds as a live essay in sound, speech, light, and shadow, exploring resonance as both a physical phenomenon and a framework for thinking through trans embodiment, instability, and relation.

A solo tour-de-force, Essay on Resonance plays with the spectacle of the “one-man-show.” From onstage, Smith controls bare-bones rock concert lighting, live projections, and sonic processing, switching modes rapidly between performance lecture, pop concert, shadow puppet show, and ambient-folk musical encounter. Meaning emerges associatively through accumulation, interference, repetition, and drift — much like the nebulous way we make sense of our own bodies.

Lyn Corelle opens the evening with a hybrid set of short films, live banjo, and readings from their writing.

Corey Smith (they/them) is a composer, writer, and performance artist from Chicago, Illinois. Interested in critical regionalism, the sensuality of performance, and a queer sonic ecology, their work ignores the boundaries of what music, text, or performance might be. They dip in and out of genres, mashing together the spectacle of a pop concert, the heady analysis of a lecture, the formal experimentation of a performance art happening, and the material transformations of a puppet theater.

Their work has been seen across the US and Europe, at venues including the Steppenwolf Theater, the Hyde Park Art Center, the Mattress Factory, the Rotterdam Film Festival, and the Chicago International Puppet Festival. They have been an artist in residence at Saari Residence, Vashon Artist Residency, ACRE, High Concept Labs, the University of Illinois Springfield, Light Box Detroit, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, and Grin City. Their work has been featured by Hyperallergic, Architectural Digest, and the Chicago Reader.

They teach at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Life-Changing Magic of County Government

The Life-Changing Magic of County Government

Guests: Hennepin County Board of Commissioners Marion Greene (District 3) and Angela Conley (District 4)

You see them on the ballot. You might even hear about them on the news. They represent you in government, but do you know their names?

On this week’s edition of The Theater of Public Policy, we’re bringing two Hennepin County Commissioners to the stage to finally answer the question: “What is it you all do, anyways?” (Hint: it’s way more than you think).

We’ll talk about the fight to fund HCMC, how seven people decide to spend 3 billion dollars, and why Hennepin County is shaped like the lovechild of Utah and Michigan. Then, Danger Boat’s cast of improvisers will perform on-the-spot comedy scenes about everything they’ve heard.

This unique event is everything you ever wanted: a comedy show and an inside look into Hennepin County governance all wrapped up in one!
